In the last week, we moved out of the purple tier and into the red tier, allowing some sports to begin practicing. However, changes are still being made every day in order to ensure that it is safe for our athletes to play.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, we must follow multiple protocols and restrictions to protect athletes, spectators, and coaches. Before playing, everyone must sign-in and go through a screening process that involves taking the individual’s temperature and answering questions. There is also a limit on how many spectators each player can invite to games depending on the student’s sport. Soccer and football allow six spectators per player while water polo and baseball only allow two spectators per player. As of now, indoor sports and activities are still not allowed. Once they are cleared to resume, athletes will have to be tested for COVID multiple times a day.

Mask regulations vary from sport to sport. Tennis players must wear their masks at all times while athletes who play sports that heavily rely on running aren’t required to wear their masks on the field. Although water polo and football players will not wear masks during their games and practices, they are required to wear them while they are off the field.

Overall, the district and athletics department have done a good job of allowing kids to play in a safe environment while giving a sense of normalcy to student-athletes.
